Some Speculation:
1. Jones set the red Fringe team up so that this "old model" shapeshifter could go on a specific mission on the other side. The Shapeshifter seemed to have a "six sense" in being able to tell "types" of people apart -Good people from Bad people. It may be considerered a type of predeterminer which goes along with other people seeing the immediate future this season and "time displacement". I don't think we are out of the woods yet with September's prophecy and Olivia's former awareness to Mr. X. If I would be right and Mr. X [always] relates to leader of a spiritual terrorist organization that uses scientific knowledge as proof to their theology, then this shapeshifter, Meana, or Jones are likely candidates to fill the role of Walternate. (Walternate also sent the shapeshifters on missions...none so famous as Newton to infiltrate the blue fringe team)
2. "World's Apart" Press Release makes me think that the cortixifan subjects are going to fight each other, or ill used by Jones. One idea I had was if the shapeshifter kill some the of the cortixifan subjects and they steal their abilities as a by product. Another possibility is that Jones is going to make black hole(s) and time travel to other time periods and/or other parts of time lines....
Nick Lane is also suppose to appear in this episode and although this Nick Lane could just be this timeline's version, I can not deny that he and Sally Clarke "vanished" while also almost killing Red Lincoln in "Over There Pt.1"
It makes me go back to me original thoughts at the beginning of the season in which this time line was a previous iteration to seasons 1-3, until Peter arrived to alter it and make it new. Additionally I used Olivia's experience in "The Road Not Taken" as justification for it, since she crossed over and got information that allowed her to change the out come in the time line viewed where both of the twins died, instead she was able to save one of them.
We also know that ZFT was trying to activate them for a reason, a reason that was unkown to us. It also seems that that both plots with ZFT and the shapeshifters were dropped due to Walternate's revenge and the discovery of the machines...which also makes me think the machine will be important again. (The newest comic in the Beyond the Fringe Series hints at clone Jones'/Olivias, the future, advanced transportation, a need to find non technologically advanced resources, and that the machines produce "strange" matter that can be used, although VERY deadly if not contained)

Yet for all their evolution, they form no bonds.
Love does not exist for them. They are incapable of dreaming,
Of contemplating beauty, Of knowing something greater than themselves.
