Hey, welcome to 'The Leftorium'! :D The Thread for Anything Left-Handed.

If you are a proud to be lefty, this is the right place for you. And righties, don't feel excluded! If you have family or friends who are left handed and have something to share here, you are pretty much welcome as well. :)

Some interesting things about left-handedness:

- Well, first of all, is still uncommon. We are, approximately, the 7 or 10% of the world's total population. And well, if you are a female, you are even more uncommon. How great is that? :w00t:

- Many good things come out of being a lefty but yeah, others are not so good. We are a minority and plenty of this world's things were not made with us in mind.

- Left-handedness, in comparison to the general population, also appears to occur more frequently in both identical and fraternal twins, and several groups of individuals with neurological disorders (such as people with epilepsy, Down's Syndrome, autism, mental retardation and dyslexia). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handedness

- One of the causes of left-handedness is thought to be exposure to higher rates of testosterone before birth, which can lead to a left-handed child. This is the Geschwind theory, named after the neurologist who proposed it, Norman Geschwind. It suggests that variations in levels of testosterone during pregnancy shape the development of the fetal brain. Testosterone suppresses the growth of the left cerebral hemisphere and so more neurons migrate to the right hemisphere. The highly developed right hemisphere is now better suited to function as the center of language and handedness. The fetus is more likely to become left-handed, since the right hemisphere controls the left half of the body. The theory goes on to tie the exposure to higher levels of testosterone and the resultant right-hemisphere dominance to auto-immune disorders, learning disorders, dyslexia, and stuttering, as well as increased spatial ability. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handedness

. In his book 'Right-Hand, Left-Hand', Chris McManus of University College London argues that the proportion of left-handers is rising and left-handed people as a group have historically produced an above-average quota of high achievers. He says that left-handers' brains are structured differently in a way that widens their range of abilities, and the genes that determine left-handedness also govern development of the language centres of the brain. McManus also says that the increase in the 20th century of people identifying as left-handed could produce a corresponding intellectual advance and a leap in the number of mathematical, sporting, or artistic geniuses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handedness

- There are many theories on how being left-handed affects the way a person thinks. One theory divides left- and right-handed thinkers into two camps: visual simultaneous vs. linear sequential. According to this theory, right-handed people are thought to process information using a "linear sequential" method in which one thread must complete its processing before the next thread can be started. Left-handed persons are thought to process information using a "visual simultaneous" method in which several threads can be processed simultaneously. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handedness

There are also a lot of famous left-handers in all fields. Politicians (many US presidents have been lefties), authors like Lewis Carroll or Mark Twain, musicians like Paul McCartney, Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Robert Plant; athletes, artists, actors/actresses (among those, Josh Holloway  ) and fictional characters like Bart Simpson, Flanders and Sawyer. :D

I've never come to think some people here could be left-handed, but hey, there are many possibilities. :)

Yeah, I had to get used to it, although I don't use a mouse anymore because I love my laptop pad.

So what do my fellow lefties do right-handed?

For me, I play both golf and cricket like a rightie, but all other sports I play leftie.

I'm also left footed (I think perhaps only people who have played (association) football might know this one)... and no, I don't mean Roman Catholic (though I was raised as one of them too) :w00t:

I can do many things with both hands and feet, for example: playing ping-pong (although I prefer my left hand), kicking balls, cutting (with knives) and mixing (that's useful if you get tired), open jars and stuff like that. I hate volleyball, but when I had to play it at school and it was my time to serve, I hit the ball with my right hand. I have never owned a lefty scissor, so I cut papers and others with my right hand.

Even if my right handwriting is quite ugly, is still readable. My left hand is a little bit stronger but for some weird reason, rings that go slightly lose on my left fingers, fit or feel tight on my right hand.

That's cool! :w00t:
Completely ambidextrous? Do you have preferences when it comes to decide which hand to use at certain activities?
