CSI: NY's Sela Ward: The Final Act of Rapist Arc Is 'Very Unnerving… a Great Thriller'
Get More: Interviews, Previews

Matt Webb Mitovich
This Friday on CSI: NY (CBS, 9/8c), the John Curtis storyline enters its final act with Det. Jo Danville reeling from the fact that the suspected rapist whom she had a role in setting free years ago in D.C. has eluded another charge, again due to compromised evidence — in the latest instance, a victim’s shaky testimony.
“She is furious,” Sela Ward tells TVLine of Jo’s state of mind. “She is absolutely obsessed with getting this guy (played by Third Watch‘s Jason Wiles), so she’s being doing things that get her in a little bit of trouble with Mac. She’s a loose cannon at this point.”
Despite her best-ish efforts to keep herself officially away from the latest Curtis case, this week the dead body of a key player effectively pulls Jo into the mix. ”Things become really interesting,” Ward teases. Especially since, she notes, “There’s more than one person who wants to see this guy behind bars — or dead.”
Among those with personal agendas who have Curtis in their crosshairs, there’s the senator (Once & Again‘s Jeffrey Nordling) whose daughter was the rape victim in D.C. We’re also about to meet a former FBI colleague of Jo’s (House alum Michael Weston) who did not weather the fallout of Curtis’ first acquittal quite as well as she has.
“He really is a tragic figure in this story because he just kind of loses it,” Ward says. “His whole career was ruined because of the mistake he made to let the rapist go free [in D.C.], so he really fell apart.”
TVLine’s Law-Enforcement Crushes Bracket Tournament: CSI: NY‘s Lindsay vs. Criminal Minds‘ Prentiss!
With all these characters in play — and given how last week’s episode ended by indicating that someone had coerced a young NYC woman into falsely accusing Curtis of rape this time around — “You just don’t know how it’s going to end,” says Ward. “It’s very unnerving and disturbing.”
The final two acts of this week’s episode, in fact, she touts as “a great thriller.”
Watch a semi-spoilery sneak peek here, then read on for more….

One way or another, by the end of the CBS dcrime rama’s fall finale, “Jo absolutely is able to put [the John Curtis case] behind her,” Ward previews. “And that will be a huge thing for her.”
To have delved so deeply into the backstory of a crime procedural character, and a relatively new one at that, “has been great,” Ward raves, “because I’m all about character-driven storylines. This has given me something to chew on, and with a procedural it’s hard to get that.”
The Curtis arc also gave Ward a chance to chew the fat with Nordling, who on Once & Again played her ex-husband. Reunited on CSI: NY set, she says, “We caught up on everybody and where everybody is, which was really nice. And shortly after I saw him I ran into Billy Campbell” – aka her O&A beau – “and we went and had a great, four-hour lunch.”
Hey, in the event that Campbell’s character on AMC’s The Killing is still alive, maybe Jo Danville could cross the country and use her forensics know-how to get him acquitted of Rosie Larsen’s murder? “Oh, I’d love that!” Ward says with a laugh. “That’s a great idea.”

‘NY’ Plans Potential Romance For Mac Taylor

Posted by Shane Saunders - 07/12/11 at 08:12 am

CSI Files’ Shane Saunders gets the scoop from CSI: New York executive producers Pam Veasey and Zachary Reiter about a potential new love interest entering Mac Taylor’s life.

After concluding a three-episode arc shedding light on Jo Danville’s (Sela Ward) past, CSI: NY will soon begin another multi-episode storyline, this time for Gary Sinise‘s Mac Taylor.

“There’s an arc specifically related to Mac and a new old friend he reconnects with,” Co-Executive Producer Trey Callaway tells CSI Files. But does reconnecting with an old friend mean love is on the horizon for the head of the New York Crime Lab? “Some potential chemistry [is] involved there romantically,” Callaway teases.

Co-Showrunner Zachary Reiter, sitting next to his partner-in-crime Pam Veasey–taking a break from writing her snow-focused Episode 15–is able to share a bit more. ”Having started the season in “Indelible” with him feeling like he put a chapter of his life to bed to some extent and letting go, we were hoping at the back-end of the season we would pay that off with him being open to finding love,” the former state’s attorney reveals. “How quickly and how far that develops, we’ll see, but we certainly want to have that character walk off and feel like ‘I’m a bit of a different person now’ should this series end.”

Though her episode won’t air until February at the earliest, Veasey is able to provide some information on her time-traveling episode with CSI Files. “I’m always fascinated with history and cold cases, like the Black Dahlia case,” the NY vet says. “We create a case in New York City that has that kind of history and notoriety in our story.”

8.15 "Flash Pop":

~ A young tech from the New York Crime Lab, Roni, was stabbed to death. The team interacts with several other young techs, including Harlan, who works in the ballistics department.

~ Roni's death is similar to the murder of a young woman named Lana in 1957. Lana was stabbed with a paper spike (something like this), and she was wearing bright red lipstick. Detective Burton was the lead on the original case, and the old man comes to the lab to help Mac. Lana's murder was never solved.

~ Roni is wearing the same type of lipstick Lana was wearing, which was a popular color in 1957 - the color wasn't included in the crime report, and the crime scene photos were in black and white. The person who killed Roni has information that wasn't widely disseminated.

~ Looks like we'll see Christine from 8.12 again. Mac visits her at a cafe, and she gives him several take-out bags full of food since the team will be working an all-nighter.

ewebber3: Do you have anything on #CSINY especially something on Danny and Lindsay? Will we see them out as a team more in the spring?
We wanted to know the same thing, so we asked co-executive producer, Trey Callaway, what we could expect for the married detectives. And if you like their fun banter on the job you're going to love what's coming up: "In [episode 13] they get to have a little bit of fun over the sort of City Boy Country Girl status that they individually occupy. And let's just say it's not Danny's (Carmine Giovinazzo) idea of a walk in the park to take a walk in the park. Whereas Lindsay (Anna Belknap) is much more comfortable in her home." Callaway assures us, "Danny and Lindsay are in a very comfortable place right now, so we're just having fun letting them have fun."

Giovinazzo: I Would Like To Direct An Episode
Carmine Giovinazzo (Danny Messer) would like to step behind the camera again.

During a recent set visit, Giovinazzo talked with CSI Files’ Shane Saunders about the possibility of returning behind the camera on CSI: New York. In Season Six, the actor made his writing debut with “Sanguine Love,” an episode that delved into the world of vampires. Now, nearly two years later, Giovinazzo feels a bit of longing to return behind-the-scenes.

“I would like to direct one; unfortunately that never happened because of scheduling,” Giovinazzo shares while sitting in the New York Crime Lab’s “war room” set. Adding, “It’s pretty tough, especially when you’re not in the writers’ room every day. It was an amazing time; an eye-opening experience on how complicated it is and how it’s a team effort. It’s tough to come up with one.”

Anna Belknap (Lindsay Monroe-Messer), sitting next to him, chimes in, adding ”I am in awe that they come up with these stories.” This season of NY has ten writers working to produce eighteen episodes of the show. Belknap, for her part, is not sure she’d like to take a seat in the writers’ room and knock out a script. “I thought one year I’d like to pitch an idea, but I couldn’t come up with any that I thought were any good,” she says. ”If I had to write for anything, it wouldn’t be for this show. It’s too hard,” she confesses with a laugh. “It’s very difficult.”

Exclusive: CSI: NY Reunites Former Greek Duo
Get More: Casting News, Exclusive, Scoop

Megan Masters
It’s a ZBZ/Kappa Tau reunion — and in a most unlikely place.
TVLine has learned exclusively that Greek alumni Spencer Grammer and Aaron Hill have both landed guest-starring roles in the same episode of CSI: NY.
The former co-stars will appear on the CBS cop drama as techs in Mac’s lab who are questioned when one of their coworkers is found murdered in a manner reminiscent of a 1950s cold case.
CBS Temporarily Moves Gifted Man to CSI: NY Time Slot in Mid-February
Grammer and Hill played pledge pals for four years on Greek, ABC Family’s college comedy, which concluded its run last March.
CSI: NY resumes Season 8 on Friday, Jan. 6, with the Grammer/Hill episode set to air sometime in the spring.

Lee Majors, Gary Sinise
CSI: NY is about to call on the Six Million Dollar Man for help.

Lee Majors, the veteran actor best known for his memorable role as Steve Austin on ABC's The Six Million Dollar Man, will guest-star on an upcoming episode of the CBS drama, TVGuide.com has learned exclusively.

Check out our list of TV's sexiest crime fighters!

Majors will play Burton, a detective who worked a case in 1957 that soon went cold. When an alarmingly similar case pops up in present day, Mac (Gary Sinise) calls on Burton's expertise to help crack it.

The episode will also feature a Greek reunion: Former ABC Family stars Spencer Grammer and Aaron Hill will both guest-star as lab techs who are questioned when one of their coworkers is murdered, TV Line reports.

Besides his work on Six Million Dollar Man and its spin-off The Bionic Woman, Majors also starred in the 1980s ABC drama The Fall Guy. More recently, he has appeared on such series as The Game, Community, $#*! My Dad Says, Raising Hope and Grey's Anatomy.

CSI: NY returns Friday, Jan. 6 at 9/8c before going on hiatus in February. Majors' episode is slated to air after the show resumes, sometime in April.

8.16 - "Sláinte"

Here's what we know:

~ Colin Byrne is found dead, dismembered and dumped on the four corners of Hell's Kitchen.

~ Mac's "potential love interest" Christine is back. Christine is a waitress/hostess at a cafe, and she thinks Mac is an "idiot" for not realizing the two of them have a connection. Mac doesn't want to screw it up, and one late night after work, he shows up at the cafe with groceries in hand wanting to cook a meal together.

~ Flack gets to use his knowledge of the Gaelic language during a surveillance operation.

~ If you're a fan of Danny and Flack scenes, there's quite a few in this episode.

~ I see mentions of Adam, Hawkes, and Jo. No sign of Sid, but that doesn't mean he is not in the episode.

8.17 "Unwrapped":

~ Kelvin and his wife Elaine head to an apartment building in a rough part of town. They both grew up here, but they're much more successful now. They are here to visit Elaine's sister Alicia, who has twins celebrating their birthday today. Kelvin and Elaine head inside with a bag of gifts and ring the buzzer, waiting for a response.

~ Meanwhile, two young men are preparing to fight in the courtyard, but they stop when they hear the sound of a gunshot. A man wearing a ski mask and gloves comes running out of the apartment building, and one of the young men, Rydell, rushes over to see what happened. Kelvin is bleeding from a gunshot wound to the chest, and he tries to comfort Elaine even as he's dying. Rydell pulls out his phone to call 911, but it's too late.

~ Kelvin's death is the result of a mugging gone wrong. The team speaks with Alicia and her neighbors, who all reveal that Kelvin was a well-known and well-liked man around here. He never forgot where he came from, and he used some of the money he earned as a successful accountant to fix up the local playground and basketball courts. However, even though everybody knew Kelvin had money, Alicia didn't tell anyone that he and Elaine would be stopping by today. The shooting appears to be a coincidence.

~ Lucy's birthday is in this episode! The team heads to her party, along with Christine (8.16).
It looks like this will be their storyline-filled-with-minorities episode. Pretty much every character is black in this ~rough part of town.

Reiter: It’s Hard To Commit
Posted by Shane Saunders - 12/01/12 at 05:01 pm

On the bubble for renewal for the second year in a row, CSI: New York‘s executive producers have no choice but to write a finale that works as both a season and series finale. Executive Producers Pam Veasey and Zachary Reiter provide insight to CSI Files as to what might happen.

CSI: NY narrowly escaped cancellation last year after receiving an eleventh hour reprieve. The series was renewed shortly before CBS announced its 2011-2012 lineup at May’s upfront presentation when the network shared what shows to expect in the fall. With only eighteen episodes this season, producers are deciding yet again how to write a season finale that could also serve as a final episode.

The biggest challenge for the show is finding a way to top last year’s finale, “Exit Strategy.” Producers received positive feedback from both the show’s crew and fans, noting the episode–which found Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) contemplating a huge change in his life–was satisfying as both an end of the season closer and a series finale. Now, with less than a month to go until production on the season–and potentially series–wraps, writers are figuring out what to do–including possibly bringing back past characters.

“It’s hard to commit to those things not knowing the future of the show,” co-showrunner Zachary Reiter tells CSI Files’ Shane Saunders. ”We have to sit down; we have yet to sort of create that last possible last show/possible cliff-hanger/possible last show before next season thing,” Pam Veasey shares. “We’ll see. We’ll consider everything.”

Discussing past storylines, Veasey marveled at the possibility of bringing Jacqueline Pinol back as Rikki Sandoval. “Anybody can come back.”

8.18 - TBD

~ A drug store shooting leaves a member of the team stranded in a hallucinatory limbo between life and death.

~ The episode was written by Pam Veasey and Zachary Reiter. It's the show's season, and potentially series finale. Hopefully more info soon...
