CSI: NY‘s former leading lady Melina Kanakaredes may not be returning to wrap up her storyline, but producers still plan to give Stella a dignified send-off.

“We’re giving her a noble exit,” says co-executive producer Zachary Reiter. “We chose not to go the route of killing her off or having her go missing. We felt that would weigh too heavily on the team.”

According to showrunner Pam Veasey, viewers will learn in the show’s Sept. 24 premiere—which picks up several months after the finale—that Stella relocated to New Orleans. “She left to run a lab there,” says Veasey. “And she picked that city because it’s the city of Katrina, the city of BP oil, the city where people are looking for someone to lend a hand.

“She’ll essentially be Mac in New Orleans,” she continues. “We wanted to do something that was respectful and made a lot of sense.”

As previously reported, Emmy winner Sela Ward has been taped to fill the void left by Kanakaredes.

At least they aren't killing her. But the show is dead for me anyways.

glad they aren't killing Stella off. Killing a major character off screen sucks.

In a French interview Melina explain that she didn’t leave the show for family reasons (to take care of her daughters because she always explained them that she needed to work and that it was necessary to know how to associate both) but only because the evolution of her character did not correspond to her any more.
CBS had proposed well a reduction of salary but revised when Melina refused the offer. They then proposed again to her salary initial but she preferred not resigned.
As regards the fact of concluding the end for her character she also gave up it

She works on Elisabeth Kubler Ross's biography, one psychiatrist who has created the first homes in United States with three other doctors. She has just acquired the rights
She says that “it was a fabulous woman, in the fascinating fate! I draft a scenario of its story. I also read numerous scripts which were sent to me since the announcement of “

‘CSI: NY’ Makes Transition With Little Hoopla and A ‘Genius’ Twist
by Matt Webb Mitovich

CBS’ ‘CSI: NY‘ – which this fall moves to Fridays at 9/8c – has a lot to accomplish in its Season 7 premiere airing September 24.

For one, there’s the none-to-small matter of how the Messers extricate themselves from the closing scene of the finale, in which Danny found cray-cray killer Shane Casey in their apartment, in the middle of the night, cradling baby Lucy.

The new season’s first hour must also account for Stella’s absence (Melina Kanakaredes opted not to return to the show this fall) and introduce a new CSI, Jo Danville, to be played by Sela Ward (’Once & Again’).

Sela Ward Joins ‘CSI: NY’ In Season Premiere

While we won’t get into specifics as to how the Messers’ crisis plays out, Carmine Giovinazzo (who plays Danny) says the resolution comes “swiftly.”

Life for the New York CSIs then leaps forward five months. Stella is gone, having accepted a job in New Orleans. And it is not long at all into the premiere that Ward’s character, a former FBI agent relocated from D.C., reports for her first day.

There won’t be any donuts-and-coffee “welcome party” awaiting Jo, however.

“Just as she shows up, instantaneously there’s a crime,” Hill Harper (aka Hawkes) tells Fancast. “There’s no opportunity for a real ‘How do you do?’”

The nature of that first Season 8 crime scene is such that it’d be criminal to reveal it here. Let’s just say that we agree with Harper when he calls it “a genius choice.”

Mr. & Mystery: Did ‘CSI: NY’ Star Wed GH’s Vanessa Marcil?

On the personal front, the ‘CSI: NY’ cast has only started the process of moving on minus Kanakaredes, though having a TV vet like Ward added to the mix has soothed any sting.

“Clearly, we’ve been used to one kind of thing for six years, so it will take more than a couple of days to get used to a new character and … have the character find her way,” says series lead Gary Sinise (Mac). “We’ll all miss Melina, but Melina made a choice to move on, and we were lucky enough to have Sela come in.”

Ward is “a wonderful actress with a great personality,” says Sinise.

Bringing in a new forensics sleuth also promises to inject ‘CSI: NY’ with “a jolt of energy,” Harper believes. “Seven years in, it gets comfortable, easy to write scenes because you know the characters so well. So this will challenge the writers a bit. I’m excited about it.”

TV Guide Magazine has learned exclusively that CSI: NY has cast Edward James Olmos in his first television role since Battlestar Galactica's heroic Admiral William Adama.

In a story about gang turf wars, the actor plays a former gang leader — newly released from prison — who goes head-to-head with Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise), who had put him away 15 years earlier. The episode will air in October.

While the "CSI" mothership is getting a visit from Justin Bieber, "CSI: NY" is getting a new cast member when Sela Ward joins the team now that Melina Kanakaredes is exiting.

"I'm sort of thrown into the fire right away," Ward tells ET, which caught up with her on the set. "It is more complicated than I thought."

And Stack says, "I think Sela is such a fan favorite. She has been on so many shows. Audiences respond to her. I think her and Gary [Sinise] is a great pairing. They are both such accomplished actors."

"CSI: NY" moves to Friday nights this fall on CBS.

CSI: NY, a crime drama inspired by the drama series, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," is about forensic investigators who use high-tech science to follow the evidence and solve crimes in the Big Apple. Det. Mac Taylor, a dedicated and driven crime scene investigator who believes that everything is connected and everyone has a story, is a decorated Marine who served in Desert Storm and dabbled in war photography. The job is his life; he focuses on cases until they are solved. He works alongside the team's newest addition, Josephine "Jo" Danville, an experienced investigator from Washington, D.C., whose work is driven by her empathy for the victim. Together they partner with a team of experts, including Danny Messer, an investigator with an unflappable spirit and a troubled family history, which he uses on the job as he blends his own set of hybrid ethics. Messer was personally selected to join the team by Mac, and he attempts daily to live up to that honor and responsibility. Sheldon Hawkes is the crime lab's former coroner, a brilliant Ph.D. who transitioned to the field team. Joining them is Don Flack, an edgy, hardcore homicide detective with a quick wit, impressive forensic insight and a long family history in law enforcement; and Lindsay Monroe Messer, a young, athletic CSI with a Midwestern work ethic who is willing to roll up her sleeves to tackle any job, and rarely hints at the dark and devastating secret that originally motivated her to dedicate her life to being an investigator. Lindsay and Danny are married, and have a daughter, Lucy. Rounding out the team is lab rat Adam Ross and eccentric coroner Dr. Sid Hammerback. The New York CSIs may have a different process from those in Las Vegas or Miami, but they are guided by the same steadfast determination. These skilled investigators follow the evidence as they piece together clues and eliminate doubt to ultimately crack their cases.

Begins its seventh season on the CBS Television Network in Sept. 2010

Have you learned any extra details about Sela Ward's character on CSI: NY? — Elle

MegaBuzz: I got a few straight from Ward's mouth during a recent visit to the set. Her character, Jo Danville, has a son, whom she adopted from a woman she helped put away. She's also amicably divorced, which Ward says she hopes will lead to some romantic tension between Jo and Gary Sinise's Mac. Also, her first day on the job will be a doozy: She finds a dead body — in the crime lab!

7.03 "Damned if You Do":

~ Nelson and Louise Travers have been brutally beaten while asleep in their bed. Nelson is dead, but Louise is clinging to life as she struggles to reach the phone and call 911. Mac is nearby when the call goes out, so he gets to the scene as the paramedics are working on Louise. This might be his only chance to speak to her if she doesn't make it. He picks up a photo from the nightstand of Louise and Nelson with their son Billy and asks if her son is the person who did this. She gestures with her hand. Yes, he was.

~ Meanwhile, Billy is at a party with his girlfriend. He's surprised when the police bust in to arrest him - and he's shocked when they accuse him of his father's murder and the attempted murder of his mother. He and his girlfriend deny that he would ever kill his parents, but unfortunately he doesn't have a solid alibi to prove his innocence.

~ The team ends up with several conflicting stories and suspects, and they have to unravel the truth to figure out who would come into the Travers' house and attack them in such a vicious way.

~ Sid gets a scene with Jo - it looks like it might be his first scene with her.

~ Also, Adam has what appears to be a hilarious scene pretending to perform a polygraph test.

~ Everybody is mentioned.

Will Claire Forlani or Madchen Amick be back on ‘CSI: NY‘ as Mac Taylor’s potential love interest? – Cassie
During my recent visit to the ‘CSI: NY’ set, when I asked Gary Sinise about Mac’s “journey” this season – given that they threw love interests old and new at him last spring – he answered that prior to the Melina Kanakaredes/Sela Ward swap, “We had some things planned, but now things have changed. We have new priorities.” Make of that what you will.
