Christopher Nolan

From The Prestige:

Alfred Borden: A real magician tries to invent something new, that other magicians are gonna scratch their heads over.

I believe that this is a metaphor for what Nolan tries to do with his films. Create something so creative, so full of genius, a film that really does make audiences and critics scratch their heads... in both confusion and wonderment at how such an epic creation was pulled off.

Truly, this is what Inception, The Prestige and (to some extent) The Dark Knight do. I can't say for the others, for I have not seen them yet (but I intend to watch them (Memento/Following/Insomnia)) but I'm sure they are similar.

So -- what is your favourite Nolan film? How would you rank them?

Only one of his I haven't seen is Following. I think he's amazing and is consistently creating fantastic films that are unlike anything I've ever seen before. I think you hit the nail on the head with that quote from The Prestige. He's a master innovator of movies. Ranked from what I've seen:

1) Inception
2) The Dark Knight
3) Memento (this one and The Dark Knight are neck and neck though, ask me again tomorrow and they might switch places, though overall this one is more creative and artistically speaking better, though TDK is oftentimes more entertaining to watch)
4) The Prestige
5) Batman Begins
6) Insomnia (mediocre...the only film of his I could say that for)

INCePTION

This movie is beyond awesome, brilliant and a sodding masterpiece.

1 It has Leo and a grand little ensemble of cheeky chappies.
2 The soundtrack rocks your world at the speed of light
3 Your world view is altered permanently
4 Love movies with a puzzle : demands viewer involvement and concentration to detail
5 Rollicking breakneck pace with dense-tense and suspense
6 MindBLOWING spec fx
7 Novel original film structure mucking with concepts of time. Etc.
8 totally awesome hotel scene with sidekick kicking arse. LOVE LOVE LOVE this!
9 Class One-liners
10 Woah! WTF end

Loss & Possession, Death & Life are one : There falls no shadow where there shines no sun

I've only seen Nolan's 4 most recent films but I'll rank them anyway.

1. Inception [If you were to tall me I'd rank it here 2 days ago, I wouldn't have believed you as The Dark Knight is one of my favourite films]
2. The Dark Knight
3. Batman Begins
4. The Prestige

Every single one of those Nolan films I've seen are all brilliant in their own right. Even Batman Begins and The Dark Knight have a very different but still awesome feel when your watching them. After watching Inception, I definitely have to watch the rest of his films as Nolan is a clever and brilliant director.
